Mothers & Daughters
(Earth Mother & Soul Daughter) [Celebration of Divine Feminine] [Sephardic Reggae-Rap to Raise the Spirit & Awaken Devotion] [Ascend & Ground Your Existence in Dance]
Culminating the ORIGINS practice, this is a peak towards his evolving direction: As Samuel Abelow surges forth from the Puer-Dionysus persona into the fullness of Hebrew joyousness, the ORIGINS moves towards the SHEMAH, and thus the 7 years of travail (in Jungian psychoanalysis) generate a radiantly integrated personality (a homecoming to the Jewish path). A celebration of the living presence — of “the fruitful vine” and the “olive branch”: old & young at once; an eternal process of creativity, family and community; of “Mother & Daughter” — with stunning effervescent love. Abelow, being unmarried but bound to forever expressing the undying feminine soul in his arts, sings an eternal song, raising the Goddess from the depths of psyche up towards the Heavenly heights.
Abelow’s soul is as much originally diaspora jewish as it is authentically connected to creole cultures of meso and South America — having grown up under the care of Caribbean care-takers (“second mothers”), and even traveling, meeting with Belizean women at a young age, finding inspiration in exchanges of dance. Additionally, his commitment to the exploration of the “Black Model” in art history, gave him further crucial insight into the collective projection onto minority groups, and an artistic impetus to recover the lost value of their people — the half-brothers & sisters of the Jews (See: Noah’s Curse as well as the story of Judah & Tamar in Genesis). Growing into further Jewish observance and discovering his Soul fully intact, despite so much struggling, he set out to spiritually celebrate the feminine, reaching back to Jung’s concept of the “Old & Jung”, Courbett’s idea of the “Maternal & Transformative/Static & Dynamic” as well as the Genesis story of Jacob’s wives “Leah & Rachel”.
This song was then written, composed, recorded and finished in blazing speed. A major contribution to the genius of this piece is Gene Pino, maestro guitarist, coming to the studio with a 1953 Gibson L5 and a Handmade Brazilian Nylon String Guitar. Gene Pino recalls, “I felt like we went into an alternate world during that recording session.
Lyrics:
Shemah (2020) (Origins)
And I’m Samuel Abelow.
Mothers — Mothers & daughters.
Mothers — Mothers & daughters.
(Woah)
Gotta keep you close to the chest,
‘Cause you the best
And I want you for the rest of my life.
Introduce you to the set,
Now I wanna make you for the rest of my life.
Like a Bonnard painting, I’m bougie thank you:
Kids and they playing, the beauty of food and a blanket.
Mm now baby, what’s the statement? When we hit the banquet.
Mm you’re my lady, I’m Samuel Abelow,
Got God to enlighten, sixteen bars to heighten.
Oh we gotta elevate; our sisters are the life we make —
Let’s love ‘em, let’s love ‘em!
We built this house; we live in this home.
Mothers — Mothers & daughters.
Mothers — Mothers & daughters.
You the one, dig it, baby I dig it alright.
You the one, dig it, baby I dig it alright.
(Woah)
She holds me down; I hold her up.
She’s the only love, the one I trust.
(Neshama)
With every memory, with every passing day;
Every mother is her daughter — let’s celebrate.
Gonna call upon a spirit when I celebrate.
Go up in your spirit when you celebrate;
Let the moon shine bright when you celebrate;
Let it hit your heart when you celebrate;
Gotta raise the town when we celebrate;
Gotta raise the heart when you celebrate;
The ladies are the life that we celebrate.
We built this house; we live in this home.
Mothers — Mothers & daughters.
Mothers — Mothers & daughters.
You the one, dig it, baby I dig it alright.
You the one, dig it, baby I dig it alright.
(Woah)
Talking to a higher power: Watch what you say,
What you spray may come back at you.
Faith in a higher power: Watch what you say,
We all participate.
Speaking from a higher power: Everything you say
Comes back your way. (Back your way)
Just allow the spark.
Mothers — Mothers & daughters.
Mothers — Mothers & daughters.
Mothers, mothers & daughters
(Baby) (Woah)
Mothers, mothers & daughters
(Baby I dig it alright) (Woah)
Mothers, mothers & daughters
(Woah) (I dig it)
Mothers, mothers & daughters
(Baby I dig it alright) (Woah)
Baby, I dig it alright.
Baby, I dig it alright.
Baby, I dig it alright.
Baby. Dig it alright.
Woah! I dig it alright.
Mothers & daughters,
Mothers & daughters.
(Woah)
